| Our Steeple Is Raised!! June 25, 2006 This past Friday we witnessed the raising of our replacement steeple for the First Congregational Church UCC of North Attleborough. This has been a three-year project that is nearing completion. Friday the bell tower bell, bonnet and weathervane went up. There is some final work to be done to finish the belfry and the bell, but the major work is done. This is a great day for all members, friends, and citizens of Oldtown who have worked and supported this project. Thanks and blessings to them all. Here's a selection of pictures from beginning to end... |

Press Release - September 16, 2004 First Congregational Church of North Attleborough - The First Congregational Church of North Attleborough has become a "talking church" thanks to the ingenuity of some members who have access to a short range radio transmitter and a desire to get the church's story out to the neighborhood. If you drive in the circular driveway and tune your radio AM dial to 1700, you'll hear all about the history of the "First Church of the Attleboros" and also about their present campaign to get the steeple and bell back where it belongs. The old steeple parts are on the side yard after weathering 176 years of service atop the historic meetinghouse designed by Ezra Walker. "The new steeple will be an exact replica of the old one," said Moderator Ed Clavette. "The bill will be $80 thousand dollars. We've already raised $17 thousand, so we're on our way," he added. "We hope everyone will come and hear all about North Attleborough's historic treasure in Oldtown" said Pastor Katrina Clinton. The 5 minute talk is on a continuous loop and can be heard only in close proximity to the church. The First Congregational Church UCC is located at 675 Old Post
Road, North Attleborough, MA. Questions regarding the Steeple Project contact via email:

Press Release - September 10, 2004 First Congregational Church of North Attleborough - The "First Church of the Attleboros" is trying to get her steeple back atop the historic 1828 structure, the third building since its founding in 1712. "Last February we managed to get the belfry, bell, and bonnet down after we found it worn by the weather and years. Now it's time to get the replacement made and back where it belongs," said the Rev. Katrina Clinton, pastor of the 123 member congregation. "Our goal is to raise $80 thousand dollars by November 14th, Founders Day." The Oldtown Church has several events planned to reach the $80 thousand goal. A special "InSPIREation Auction" will be held on October 16th at 7 PM. Ed Clavette, moderator of the church said, "We have also sent out packets and letters to area businesses to ask for their help. This church is such a treasure to the Oldtown district. We need some help from our neighbors to restore this historic structure to the beautiful architecture of Ezra Walker, the original architect." The plans for the replica design include the return of the George Handel Holbrook bell, complete with a bell rope so it can be rung by hand as well as by automation. Every Spring, all third-graders in North Attleborough have a tour of Oldtown, which includes a stop at the Oldtown Church with the little pews with the doors, the wavy original window glass, the Stevens tracker-action organ and of course the bell. Mrs. Carolyn Chretien, historian and tour guide, said, "It'll be so great to be able to ring the bell for the students again!" The tours have gone on for years and many adults remember their tour when they were 9 or 10. "I wonder how many students have had the tour," Pastor Clinton
said. "If there have been The First Congregational Church UCC is located at 675 Old Post

Oldtown Steeple Fund Hair Raising Event
by Ed Clavette, Moderator
Two months ago I offered to shave my beard for pledges to the Steeple fund.
April 17th was the end date, and the amount collected determined if
I got a trim or a shave. Your generosity (or curiosity) came through and we
received a total of over $3,100. As you can see this has transformed me. We had
a great coming out party on Saturday with good music from Rick Morin's band the
Rhythm Room, and Master Barber, Dick Langille did the cutting honors, (with the
assistance of Conrad Morel and others.) We still have a way to go to raise the
money needed to put our bell and steeple back in place, but this was an
excellent beginning. Thank you all!
